Moorhen Families at Melaka 28 October 2006

Me and my girlfriend went over to this paddy field in Melaka hoping to see a few raptors in action but the only raptors we saw were Black-shouldered Kite and Black Kite. The most approachable species today is the Common Moorhen (not only one but 3 families). Each family consist of at least 4 chicks. The parents were fed the chicks with apple snails - plenty of this snail in the water and the pinkish eggs can be seen almost everywhere above the water surface.

The other species include zitting cisticola, scaly-breasted munia, brown shrike, unID terns, little egret, purple heron, Blue-tailed Bee Eater, White-throated Kingfisher, etc.
